Why Your House Got So Polite

What You Want Hasn't Changed

You still save them the last of the good coffee.

Something funny happens at work, and they’re the first person you want to tell.

Then the calendar conversation starts.

Twenty minutes later, you’re both saying things neither of you means, in the same order you said them last month.

The affection hasn’t gone anywhere. What’s missing is a way to finish that conversation differently.

If any of this sounds familiar
  • Nobody's fighting.
  • The trash goes out on time, the bills get paid, and you're both unfailingly courteous about the thermostat.
  • One of you tells a story at dinner, and it feels like an announcement.
  • Good night gets said the way you'd say it to a coworker.
  • You're both tired in a way that sleep doesn't reach.
You already have the hard part. You both still want this.

Nobody's fighting.

Progress, not perfection.

Your Relationship Gets Mapped Before Anything Changes

We start with information.

A joint session to hear how you two got here.

Then we meet with each of you alone, and you complete a detailed questionnaire online.

What comes back is a map: where your relationship is genuinely strong, and where it keeps giving way.

Decades of Gottman research backs it up. Before we change anything, we both know what we’re looking at.

Reacting

becomes

Responding.

See If This Is Right for You

What Changes Once You Both Have the Map

  • Recognize the moment a conversation turns, and change what happens next
  • Say the hard thing without either of you bracing for it
  • Move from reacting to responding, in real time
  • Rebuild the daily friendship underneath the partnership
  • Reconnect emotionally and physically, at a pace you both choose
What working together looks like

Your Three Phases, From First Session to Graduation

01·

Assessment & History

Three sources of information: the two of you together, each of you separately, and a written questionnaire you each fill out.

You'll have a real map before anything changes.

02·

Bridging & Intervention

We name what's driving your conflicts and disarm the patterns that trigger defensiveness. Gridlocked topics turn into conversations you can actually finish.

You both learn the tools and practice them with me.

03·

Integration & Graduation

We build a roadmap for keeping what you've built: deepening the daily friendship, catching the old habits early, and handling what comes next without me.

You graduate, and the two of you keep the work going.

Why Trust Me as Your Partner in Healing
Trained in the Gottman Method

The tools I use with you come out of decades of research on real couples, which is why our sessions are structured rather than improvised.

Honest, Once You Feel Safe

You'll get an unhurried, nonjudgmental room to start. Once you both trust me, I'll tell you plainly what I'm seeing between you.

No Sides, No Verdicts

I'm not here to decide which of you is right, and neither of you will be treated as the problem in the room.

Hi, I'm Kayla.

I’m deeply passionate about this work and committed to helping you better understand yourself and move toward the life you want.

Creating a space where you feel comfortable opening up is essential to me.

I bring an easygoing, compassionate, and nonjudgmental approach to our work together.

I hold a Master of Social Work (MSW) from Azusa Pacific University and have been privileged to work with individuals and families across various settings for over 10 years.

My approach is built on warmth, authenticity, and directness.

I don’t just sit and listen; I am an active participant, offering gentle challenges, reflective observations, and practical guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions

We tried couples counseling before. Why would this be different?

Plenty of couples spend those sessions relitigating last week. Here the first sessions go into the assessment, so we work from what your relationship shows us.

How long does this take?

The assessment runs the first few sessions. After that, it depends on your map and how much the two of you practice in between. I’ll give you a realistic picture once I’ve seen the results.

My partner isn't sure about therapy. Do we still come?

Yes, and hesitation at the start is common. Phase one gives each of you a private individual session, and that hour is where a reluctant partner settles in. Ask them to come for the assessment, then decide together.

Does couples therapy work over video?

Many couples find it easier to stay consistent this way, because nobody has to get across town at the same hour. You’ll meet with me from home, anywhere in California.

We're not married. Is this still for us?

Yes. I work with couples who are dating, living together, engaged, and married. What matters is that the two of you still want to build something and keep hitting the same wall while you try.
